(Please be sure Dr. Wade appears on the Subject line, to insure proper delivery)

Dr. Wade received her veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1997 and was awarded the Mid-Atlantic States Association of Avian Veterinarians "E.L. Stubbs" award for outstanding competence in avian medicine. After graduation, Dr. Wade established an avian practice at Blue Cross Small Animal Hospital in Amherst, NY. This was the first hospital to offer complete primary healthcare as well as specialty referral services for birds and exotic animals in Western New York. Dr. Wade also spearheaded the formation of and provides assistance with after-hours emergency care coverage for avian & exotic pets at the Greater Buffalo Veterinary Services in Amherst, NY.

Dr. Wade's primary practice interests are psittacine medicine and behavior, but she also enjoys surgery and working with wildlife. She was awarded 2004 veterinarian of the year by the New York State Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. Dr. Wade lives with her two Meyer's parrots, "Pepper" and "Kelly." She Joined BVC in Feb. 2006

Joyce

Joyce
Joyce is a 1981 graduate of Delhi Ag & Tech, and has been working as a Licensed Veterinary Technician since her graduation. She has worked with Dr. Burgwardt since 1990. She is a New York State licensed wildlife rehabilitator and a member of the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Technician Society. When not at work, Joyce enjoys gardening, fishing, and sewing.

Kerry
I have always loved animals. I took A small animal care course in high school which included an internship at a animal hospital. I knew right away I wanted to work in the field. I worked at another hospital for a couple of years then joined Broadway in the spring of 2000. I enjoy my job very much. I think we have a truly wonderful staff and a lot of great clients that I have formed close friendships with. I have two dogs that you might meet on any given day because one of the perks of this job is bringing your pets to work!

Jennifer
Jennifer (JJ) started working at Broadway Veterinary Clinic in 2001. She previously worked at another veterinary hospital for 5 years as a veterinary assistant and groomer. She also worked as a part-time dog control officer. She has currently rescued and is giving a loving home to 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 rabbits. Jennifer loves going to work every day and truly has a passion for helping animals.

Denise
Denise graduated from Medaille College in 1992. She worked at other local veterinary practices as a Veterinary Technician before joining Broadway Vet Clinic in 1999. Her interest in exotic animals and wildlife brought her to the BVC where she was eager to learn more about them. Denise is also a docent (volunteer) for the Buffalo Zoo and a member of the Western New York Herpetological Society. She owns 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bird and various reptiles and amphibians.

Gail
Gail has been at the BVC since 1995. She resides in Elma with her husband, Doug, and two dogs. They are rescued Springer Spaniel mixes named Elliott and Kirby. She has a son, Jeff, who resides in Las Vegas, NV. Gail enjoys NASCAR racing, travelling, and jewelry making.
Carol

Carol
Carol is a graduate of Medaille College and has worked as a licensed veterinary technician at the Broadway Veterinary Clinic since 1997. She loves taking care of wildlife, exotic, and domestic animals. She has a strong interest in animal dentistry and is a qualified Veterinary Dental Technician. She has an Australian Shepherd named "Angel," an orange tabby cat "Marty," and a gray and black tabby, "Mufasa." When Carol is not at work she loves to garden, and she maintains the clinic's pond and landscape.

Nancy
Nancy R

Before joining the staff in September 2006 Nancy was a long time client. She has been bringing her pets to BVC since they opened and was a client of Dr. B's and the late Dr. Kondrich at the former Alden Veterinary Clinic.

Nancy has owned, trained and bred Bull Terriers for 25 years, showing several to their championships and obtaining an obedience title on her first Bull Terrier, Gwynn. She belongs to the Bull Terrier Club of America, the Bull Terrier Club of Canada and is one of the founding members of the Bull Terrier Club of the Niagara Frontier. She had previously worked at a boarding kennel for 8 years and does dog sitting. She also acts as a "doggy midwife", whelping litters for other Bull Terrier owners.

When suddenly widowed after 28 years Nancy realized it was time to return to work and was fortunate to find a position at BVC that utilizes her skills and coincides with her interests. She loves the fascinating mix of patients, the great working environment and terrific staff at BVC.

Animal husbandry must run in the family as Nancy's daughter, Heather, is a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic. Heather also shows and breeds Bull Terriers and she is a fabulous dog show handler. Nancy is a diehard Mac owner and maintains a blog. She enjoys reading (one can never have too many books), art, the opera, showing dogs and collecting interesting specimens. She currently has 2 Bull Terriers, Londo (pictured here) and Alvin, with a third on his way from the UK sometime in 2007.

Marvin

Marvin
Originally a stray brought in by a former staff member, Marvin is thought to have been born around 1997. After testing negative for contagious diseases and getting his vaccines, Marvin decided he owned the clinic and started taking on various jobs, like greeting people at the front desk, and sometimes checking them out further in the exam rooms. He enjoys supervising patient care in the treatment room, checking out the "I.D." of anesthetized patients and keeping kennels warm for them while they are in surgery. He is mellow and rarely ruffled by anything, but his habit of stretching to enjoy being petted by friendly people and using their legs as scratching posts in the process required a front declaw before any clients got badly punctured. Marvin loves rough petting and rubbing on people's legs to share his fur coat with them.
R.J. hard at work in the Lab
RJ

Rusty Jones, a.k.a. "R.J."
R.J. was born in March 1998 on a family farm where the parents allowed the children to keep one kitten from the litter and he wasn't the one picked. He hung around and was going to be euthanized as a nuisance when Dr. Burgwardt's mother heard of him and asked Dr. B. to take care of him for a week until she could travel to take him to Grandma. Turned out Grandma couldn't take him, but meanwhile he stole our hearts. Originally named "Clifford," we were debating changing his name to Rusty Jones/ R.J. when his previous owner's son called to see how he was doing-and the son's name was "R.J."! Our R.J. is a bit shy and prefers not to come to the more public areas of the clinic, but loves to be adored by staff as they work, and laughed at as he steals small items off the lab countertop to bat around the floor.

Calculus
Although really the pet of Dr. B. and her husband, Glenn, Calculus is our clinic dog. He was brought in at 3 months of age in October 2002 for a urinary obstruction caused by a bladder stone, and his bladder was badly damaged and ready to rupture from the accumulated urine. Treatment was estimated to be costly with a fairly good prognosis but no guarantees. Without treatment, he would die and his owners sadly decided to euthanize him to prevent suffering. Dr. B., having lost her 3 old dogs in recent years, offered them the option of signing over ownership to let her try. They were delighted that they didn't have to euthanize him if there was a chance he could be saved. (They have since gotten another beagle who comes here for veterinary care and plays with Calculus.) It was touch and go for awhile, but the little dog made it, and now seems totally normal except for needing a daily pill to prevent urine leakage and monitoring for bladder infections. The medical term for a bladder stone is a calculus, and Dr. B's husband is a mathematician, so the name was perfect! Calculus has proved to be adorable and a real asset to our practice. Morale is great when all the staff get greeted daily by a dog who acts like they are his best friends he hasn't seen in forever, and who insists they toss his toys for him occasionally throughout the day! He is sweet and gentle and has been used to visit the sick. We still often bring him into exam rooms to visit with people who know and love him and to demonstrate the proper amount of flesh over the ribs a dog should have, although now that he has Jackie to play with, he isn't very interested in playing with puppies like he used to. If you are here for an appointment and want to have Calculus come in until the doctor comes into the room, please ask-he loves to be requested!

Jackie
Named by her previous owners because her head looked like a Jack Russell Terrier, Jackie soon grew far bigger than that breed! Her owners found her high energy levels and bladder problems overwhelming with their 4 small children and planned to return her to the Buffalo Animal Shelter, when we volunteered to take her instead. Kathy took her home first, but her other three dogs didn't like her, so Dr. B. took her next and she and Calculus have been best buddies ever since. We aren't sure what she's mixed with--some think pitbull but she is very tall and slim with a pointy nose instead of a barrel-body and broad head. Others think Greyhound from her build, but we can't imagine anyone having an intact Greyhound with a mixed breed litter. Her faint black spots on her back have made us call her a Jack Russell/Dalmation mix, although other breeds can have such spots, too. Jackie LOVES people and is sure everyone loves her, too, so she learned how to open the doors to our exam rooms and just show herself in to meet everyone--we have had to keep her kenneled during office calls to stop that, but she does sometimes get brought into rooms to help socialize puppies or play with a dog or demonstrate good weight. She also loves to be requested, so feel free to do so, but be forewarned: she LOVES to kiss your face and mooch attention from the people!
